"Remind me: What is it—exactly—that you do again?"

Even my close relatives often ask that question.

“People ask me what you do, and I don't really know how to explain it," my grandmother once told me.

As an event planner, I am asked that question a lot, so I finally came up with an easier way to describe event planning:

An event is like the tip of an iceberg.

The tip is often the only part you see, and it’s the smallest part. You may attend an event or conference for a few hours or days. If executed properly, the food is delicious, the program wonderful—everything runs according to plan and schedule and seems effortless, as if it just ‘happened.’

It’s a beautiful thing.

Event planning and production are the bulk of the iceberg, beneath the water, that you don’t see.

The organization, preparation, logistics and detail execution make possible what can be seen on the surface—your excellent and amazing event. An iceberg may appear to be floating on the water, but in reality, it’s supported by a deep, extensive and strong foundation.

And that’s also a beautiful thing!
